German Shepherds and Howling…they go together…

If you own a German Shepherd and you are upset about their Howling, PLEASE don’t be. I’ve raised German Shepherds for over 35 years. They are a magnificent Breed of Dog. Very loyal and they want to bond with you.

When they Howl for you, that is their way of inclusion of you into their family. You are a member and you’d be the Big Cheese to them depending on Your behaviorisms. If you show Weakness, you won’t be their Alpha. But they take important clues from you. And a well trained German Shepherd will learn merely by hand gestures as well. I merely point in the direction I want my dogs to go. I tell them it’s time to go to bed when I want them to go to their Crates of Safety or Security or sleeping quarters which is where they sleep. They go in And I pet them after they lay down and then I close the door. I put them there when I go to town, also.

Be sure to have a good soft mat for them to sleep on in the crate or on the floor. It’s theirs. I do not leave or put food or water in their crates. They always pull the water holder down and spill the water. But I give them a Heads Up before Crate Time.

At bedtime, I always tell them to go outside and then that they’re going to Bed. This tells them to drink water if they want, grab a bite to eat if they want before going outside, and to go to the restroom. I let them stay out until they are ready to come back in and then go to bed.

I give each a slice of cheese at bedtime after they come back inside the house. I buy the 24 slices of cheese in a package. I feed them puppy chow and a daily multi-Vitamin for Dogs. I use a Call them Out Veterinary Service for all of their needs. Shots are important. There are deadly things they can get of not vaccinated like Rabies.

The puppy chow does a very good job of keeping them healthy and their coats looking great. Teeth too.

Never mistreat or Tease them. They respect honesty and loyalty you show them. And if all good things are in place, they will defend you and love you. But never purposely fight them. I never have and never will.

Several years ago, a man went thru the neighborhoods looking for Dogs to fight his Pit Bull he had on a rope with him. He’d open your gate and sic his dog on yours. A very sick individual. I am totally against Dog Fighting. Only people with a real lust for Blood do that sort of thing and are usually unlovable themselves.

German Shepherds are known to be very vocal dogs, and they may howl in the morning or when you leave the house for a number of reasons. One possibility is that they are expressing their longing and sadness at being left alone, and the howling is a way for them to communicate this. Similarly, in the morning, their howling may be a way for them to express their desire for attention or to communicate their excitement for the day to come.

In terms of what they are saying, it can be difficult to know for sure since dogs do not have a language in the same way that humans do. However, some experts believe that dogs howl as a form of social communication, and that the various tones and pitches of their howls may convey different messages or emotions. For example, high-pitched howls may indicate anxiety or fear, while low-pitched howls may indicate contentment or a desire for companionship. Ultimately, what your specific German Shepherd is saying when they howl in the morning or when you leave the house can vary from dog to dog, but generally it is a form of communication. Howling is a natural behavior for dogs, especially breeds like German Shepherds who are known for their vocal tendencies. When they howl, they may be trying to communicate a variety of things including their need for attention, their desire to communicate with other dogs or animals, their excitement or anxiety about something, or their request for help or assistance.

When your German Shepherd howls in the morning, they may be expressing their desire to start the day and be active. When they howl when you leave the house, they may be expressing their loneliness or separation anxiety. It’s possible that they are also trying to communicate with other dogs in the area or alert others to their presence.

In general, if your German Shepherd is howling excessively, it may be a sign of an underlying issue such as anxiety or boredom. It’s important to observe their behavior. German Shepherds are known for their vocalizations, and howling is one way they communicate. In the morning, they may be howling as a form of communication or to express excitement. When they howl when you leave the house, it could be a sign of separation anxiety or simply a way to express their displeasure at being left alone. The German Shepherd breed was originally developed in Germany during the late 19th century as a working dog, specifically for herding and guarding sheep. The breed was created by Captain Max von Stephanitz in 1899, who focused on developing a versatile working dog with intelligence, strength, and agility. The breed’s popularity grew quickly and German Shepherds were ultimately used in a variety of roles including police and military work, as well as search and rescue. The breed’s intelligence, loyalty, and obedience have also made them popular as service and assistance dogs. Today, German Shepherds remain one of the most popular breeds of dog around the world.

Max von Stephanitz developed the German Shepherd by crossbreeding various herding breeds from Germany, with the goal of creating a herding dog with exceptional intelligence, athleticism, and trainability. He found his ideal dog, named Horand von Grafrath, at a dog show in 1899 and used him as the foundation for the German Shepherd breed. Stephanitz also established a breed registry and standards for the breed’s appearance and temperament, which have helped to maintain the breed’s uniformity and working ability over the years.
