The bull leaping fresco is located in an exquisite Minoan fresco at the Knossos palace in Crete, dating back to 1450 BC. In the fresco, a man is depicted vaulting off the flank of a bull. The palace is an open-air museum and historical landmark that is linked to the myth of the Minotaur. Some say it is an amazing archaeological site and that it is good for kids.
Did the Minoans really jump over bulls? Or ride them?

J.B. Mauney: A Bull Riding Legend
“I hung on to him long enough for them to say I made the whistle, but in my eyes he is the greatest bucking bull there will ever be,” Mauney said. “People will raise bulls their entire life and they will never have a bull like Bushwacker. It couldn’t have happened to any better gentleman that I know than Julio Moreno.” Mauney and Bushwacker met 13 times in Bushwacker’s career. Bushwacker bucked Mauney off in all but one of those rides. The always superstitious Moreno said, “I thank J.B. J.B. was on him 13 times and Bushwacker’s number is 13. It kind of worked out good like that.”[22]
J.B. Mauney is a true legend in the world of professional bull riding. He’s conquered some of the toughest bulls in the business, including Bushwacker, who rarely let riders stay on for a full eight seconds. Mauney was one of the few who managed this feat, earning a score of 95.25 points in Tulsa, Oklahoma (2013). He’s also one of a select group to ride the legendary Asteroid, a 2012 World Champion bull.
Mauney’s career wasn’t without challenges. He transitioned from riding with a helmet to a cowboy hat, and in 2017, a serious arm injury required surgery. Despite these setbacks, his determination to be the best never faded. As he said, “when you crawl in to a chute, nothing else matters…you don’t give up until you hit the dirt.”
Mauney’s list of accomplishments is impressive. He’s a two-time PBR world champion (2013 & 2015), a two-time PBR World Finals champion (2009 & 2013), and the first rider to reach $7 million in career earnings. He also tied Justin McBride for the most televised wins in PBR history.
After facing criticism about when to retire, Mauney silenced the doubters by continuing to compete at the highest levels. In 2021, he shifted his focus to the PRCA, finally qualifying for the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in December of that year.
Tragically, Mauney’s career was cut short in 2023. A bull riding accident left him with a broken neck, requiring surgery and forcing him to retire. In a twist of fate, the bull that caused the injury, Arctic Assassin, now spends his retirement on Mauney’s Texas ranch.
J.B. Mauney’s grit, determination, and talent have earned him a place among the greatest bull riders ever.
