The US M1 Abrams tanks sent to Ukraine have faced a number of issues, including:

  • DronesDrones have made it difficult for the tanks to operate without being detected and targeted. As of April 2024, five of the 31 tanks sent to Ukraine since January 2023 had been lost to Russian action, in part due to drones.
  • ArmorSome say the tanks lack armor that can stop modern weapons. The tanks provided to Ukraine are said to be a “dumped down” version of the models custom built for Kiev, and lack depleted uranium armor plating. Instead, they use tungsten armor.
  • ElectronicsSoldiers have complained that condensation inside the tanks can fry the electronics in rain or fog.
  • AmmunitionSome say the tanks have the wrong type of ammunition for the fight, which is more often artillery than direct tank-to-tank combat.
  • Engine filtersThe tanks have 1,500-horsepower turbine engines with filters in the intakes that need to be cleaned every 12 hours to prevent engine damage.
  • FuelThe tanks use a lot of fuel and typically get only 0.6 miles per gallon.
