Nigersaurus.
Pronounced: as “NYE-jer-SORE-us”.
The Nigersaurus is the dinosaur that had 500 teeth:
- Features: The Nigersaurus was a sauropod dinosaur with a long neck and a broad, straight-edged muzzle. Its teeth were arranged in a long, straight line, forming a shovel-like shape.
- Teeth: The Nigersaurus had over 500 slender, replaceable teeth. It had up to eight replacements stacked beneath each tooth, allowing it to continually shed and replenish its teeth.
- Feeding: The Nigersaurus was a herbivore that used its long neck to consume treetop vegetation. It likely replaced each “new” tooth after just 14 days.
- Discovery: The original fossil skull of Nigersaurus was one of the first dinosaur skulls to be digitally reconstructed from CT scans.
- Nicknames: The Nigersaurus was dubbed a “Mesozoic cow” in the press.
- Fossils: The fossils of the Nigersaurus are housed at the National Museum of Niger.
